Carolyn Peoples, chairman of The Beacon Institute, today announced that The Beacon Institute has acquired the assets of The Wellspring Institute, and has named Charlotte Eliopoulos, RN, MPH, PhD, as Executive Director of The Wellspring Program. Dr. Eliopoulos will lead the Program, which currently supports several Wellspring alliances in the mid-Atlantic region and Wisconsin.
Uroplasty, Inc. highlighted results from a clinical study of Macroplastique for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence, now available in the January 2009 Journal of Urology. This is the first, large, multicenter randomized trial comparing the safety and efficacy of Macroplastique to another bulking agent used in the control group. In the Macroplastique group, the dry/cure rate was 36.9% versus 24.8% in the control group, with a 61.5% improvement compared to 48%, respectively. The authors conclude Macroplastique is a safe, effective, minimally invasive material that can be administered on an outpatient basis.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug to help patients suffering from overactive bladder ( OAB ). Toviaz ( fesoterodine fumarate ) works by relaxing the smooth muscle tissue of the bladder, thus reducing the urinary frequency, urge to urinate, and sudden urinary incontinence ( leakage of urine ), that are characteristic symptoms of OAB.
Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc., announced today that investigators presented clinical pharmacokinetic data on oxybutynin chloride topical gel (OTG), its investigational therapy for overactive bladder (OAB).
A paper published in the current issue of Reviews in Urology (2008; 10(2):85-91) concludes that urologists and other physicians treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) should prescribe medications that do not affect the heart's electrical activity (heart repolarization), especially since most men with BPH are older and often take other medications that also may impact the heart.

A recent AHPMA survey among continence care professionals has painted a bleak picture on the current state of many continence services in the UK, largely due to lack of Government funding. The survey finds that continence care staff are striving for quality care within extremely limited resources.
